Jack-O-Lanterns have a rich history and used to be much scarier. They originated in Ireland, where people carved menacing faces into turnips or potatoes to ward off evil spirits on All Hallows' Eve. The name "Jack-O-Lantern" comes from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack, who tricked the devil and was doomed to roam with a carved-out turnip lantern. Pumpkins became the canvas of choice for these eerie faces when the tradition came to North America. So, when you see a friendly pumpkin grinning on Halloween, remember that it once represented protection from malevolent forces and was a bit spookier!
