If You See This Caterpillar, Don’t Touch It No Matter What

What is the world's most venomous animal? Imagine you’re out in the garden on a lovely summer day when you spot a yellow fluffy caterpillar crawling on a leaf. You look closer and notice it has 5 black tufts of longer hair sticking out. You think, “how cute!” and reach out to pet the fuzzy little guy. But hold it right there! That’s an American Dagger, and it’s anything but harmless! Those seemingly soft pleasant hairs are more like stingers! When they get embedded in your skin, it causes a painful rash and welts. But scarier than that is a Puss Caterpillar. You’ll know immediately when this one gets its fluffy hairs in you: it feels worse than a bee sting! Then comes the rash, swelling, fever, and even muscle cramps and joint pain! It’s the most poisonous caterpillar in the US. Young ones are yellow and they get browner and hairier as they grow. Can you believe that a snail can be full of enough venom for 20 adults or that touching an octopus poses a serious danger to any living thing it meets? Some of these creatures are as beautiful as dangerous. So, here are the most venomous creatures on Earth. #brightside TIMESTAMPS:

If You See This Fish, Find Shelter Fast (and Other Natural Disaster Warnings)

Can animals sense earthquakes? Nobody can reliably predict when and where an earthquake will occur. But there are animals that can be used to predict earthquakes! For example, oarfish can feel the electromagnetic changes happening when underwater earthquakes shake the bottom of the ocean. Plus, oarfish, the longest bony fish in the world, are really bad swimmers and can't withstand strong currents. That's why they drift to the shore before tsunamis. But this isn't the only way to predict earthquakes. Have you ever heard of earthquake lights? They don't come out before every earthquake and take different colors and shapes. From short blue sparks to huge forks of light, they look as though some interstellar visitors decided to see how things are down on Earth. They can look like ball lightning that stays up from tens of seconds to minutes. Quake lights have been spotted all across the world over the centuries, from Italy to San Francisco and Japan. Powerful earthquakes followed them… What natural disasters can people predict? And how do we do it? #brightside King of Herrings or Giant Oarfish Regalecus glesne, Naturhistorisches Museum Wien: By Sandstein, CC BY 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=10386612

What If a Tiny Needle Hit Earth at Light Speed

Something’s moving towards our planet that could end all life on Earth. It's a regular needle weighing about 5 grams. You’re probably wondering why it’s so dangerous. The biggest rock to ever hit our planet was the Hoba meteorite. It weighed about 60 tons. It fell to Earth around 80,000 years ago and caused a lot of damage. Would something as small as our sewing needle be able to have the same effect? The idea itself is hypothetical, so it leaves us with a bunch of questions. Here’s the first one: What happens to a sewing needle in space? Could it actually accelerate to the speed of light? The thing we know for sure is that small things traveling at almost the speed of light would have more energy in them than really big but slow-moving objects. So our speedy needle would hit the ground really hard. But could such a big explosion really destroy our entire planet? #brightside Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz

Why Your Phone Has No Bold or Underline Buttons (And Other Whys)

How to highlight text messages? You’re writing a text message, and you want to highlight some important details in bold. But it seems like you haven’t been able to do that…well, ever! And there’s a reason why. SMS stands for Short Message Service, which serves as the courier for sending out your little digital messages. But it doesn’t let you do any rich text formatting like you can with many of your apps. Instead, there’s a restricted alphabet available for sending out texts. But let’s say you want to highlight a word in bold. Well, there's a way to do that. There are other strange things about phones. Why do you sometimes still hear an echo when you call someone? Why does your phone occasionally gets hot while you’re using it? Why have most companies removed the home button from their phones in the past few years? And what things apart from battery health, charging cables, and adaptors might be slowing down your phone? Learn some interesting smartphone facts with our new video! #brightside TIMESTAMPS:

He Saw 2 Sailors Trapped in Blizzard and Nearly Froze Saving Them

It was a cold winter morning of January 28, 1885. Fierce winds, blizzard, and freezing temperatures discouraged anyone from wandering outside at Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Head lightkeeper Marcus Hanna was cocooned in a blanket in the safety of the light station known as Two Lights. Sick with a severe cold, he was sleeping after a difficult night shift. The man was unaware of a tragedy that was unfolding not far from his home. The schooner Australia departed from Boothbay, Maine, at 5 PM on January 27. The ship was heading for Boston, and there were three people on board: the captain and two crew members. At first, the journey was uneventful. But not long after the schooner had left the port, the weather started to worsen. By midnight, a severe storm was pounding southern Maine. In no time, the temperatures dropped below zero. To avoid the worst outcome, the captain decided to seek shelter in Portland Harbor. But luck wasn't on seamen's side that night… #brightside Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz
