Imagine you've got stuck in quicksand or are locked in a car by a kidnapper. Luckily these are things that normally only happen in our worst nightmares. But there is still the possibility that you might face a life-threatening situation today and, so far, humans have turned out to fall short in effectively fighting these threats. It is clear that some expert advice is needed to figure out how to cope with the most extreme situations. Did you know, for example, that if you get trapped under some debris, for example, during an earthquake, your main task is to protect your breathing organs? Or that the most life-threatening thing about a house fire is smoke? Or how to perform the Heimlich maneuver on yourself? We suggest that you just keep calm and follow these simple survival tricks. #brightside TIMESTAMPS:

What If People Lived Inside the Earth
Could humans survive underground? Not so long ago, astronomers discovered a planet that's about 33 light-years away from Earth. This makes it our next-door neighbor. The space body is only a planet candidate because astronomers haven't measured its mass yet. But they have high hopes. Just 1.7 million miles away from its star, it completes its orbit in a day and a half. It's a scorching, deserted world with the temperatures at the surface rising up to 1,000˚F. Even more astounding, the entire planet is likely to be covered in magma! So, the question is, "What if Earth once went through some catastrophic event, and it left our planet in the same state: boiling hot, with the surface covered by a thick layer of lava? Would people manage to adapt to such conditions and move to live underground?" It sounds unbelievable, but experts are sure that with time, humans would turn into healthy and rather happy mole people! Of course, life would be very different than today… #brightside TIMESTAMPS:

30+ Facts You’ll Only Find in Japan
What makes Japan a unique country? It has many things in common with other Asian countries. But it's also similar to Europe and even the US in many ways. However, as an island nation with a long history of isolation, it's developed many aspects of culture unaffected by outside influence. For example, there're certain types of spa in Japan that offer Ramen Noodle baths to its visitors. The procedure is said to have multiple benefits from metabolism boost to smoothness due to collagen contained in pork broth. Wow what an experience! Meanwhile, the person who puts his/her hand on top of a handshake is trying to show you who's the boss. So a handshake isn't that simple. What If You Swallowed a Watermelon Seed
What happens if you swallow a watermelon seed? Will it grow in your stomach? Well, actually, watermelon seeds, just like the seeds of other berries, can't settle in the human body: they just float through our digestive system and remove themselves from the body during the day when we go to the toilet. To grow a watermelon, you need warm soil rich in nutrients. The human stomach is not fit for this, but mine turned out absolutely perfect for growing watermelons for some reason! Here's what happened. I went to the hospital after eating a juicy sweet watermelon. In that afternoon I felt something weird in my stomach. The doctors scanned my body and found an unusual abnormality. A watermelon seed I'd swallowed stayed in my stomach for some reason, and it looked like it was sprouting inside me! I wanted to get rid of it, but the doctors said it was safe as long as it was controlled. They also offered me a more than decent amount of money if I let them watch the watermelon grow… #brightside TIMESTAMPS:

14 Foods Invented by Complete Accident
Walking down the aisles in the nearest grocery store, we don’t realize that some of our favorite products have a rich history. Apparently, some of them had completely different uses when they first came out. And some foods were invented by accident! For example, Coca-Cola was surprisingly invented by John Pemberton, who had a medical degree and was a pharmacist. Pemberton's French Wine Coca was initially used as a remedy for severe pains, headache, and as a nerve tonic. According to popular legends, potato chips were invented by accident. One claims they were invented in 1853 by a chef at a luxurious New York restaurant. French fries were one of the specials at this restaurant and people seemed to love them. But there was one customer who wasn’t satisfied with the quality, complaining they were too thick. George deliberately made his next batch of fries paper-thin. These fries were so thin, it was impossible to eat them with cutlery. Surprisingly, the finicky eater loved the dish. From popsicles to yogurt, here are 14 popular foods that were invented by a complete accident. #brightside A headshot of Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya, the inventor of nachos: By Unknown/Wikimedia, CC BY-SA 4.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=93017401

There're multiple details telling you the story of that person: including body language, posture, tone of voice… and even handshake! For example, do you know what a "glove handshake" is? In fact, the person giving you such a handshake can be characterized as trustworthy. Meanwhile, the person who puts his/her hand on top of a handshake is trying to show you who's the boss. What If All Shark Species Suddenly Disappeared
The hammerhead has an incredible 360-degree vision that's called binocular. This creature's eyes are tilted forward, and their field of vision overlaps. The "Wobbegong" means "shaggy beard" in an Australian Aboriginal language. And just one look at this underwater inhabitant can explain the name choice. The viper dogfish knows how to create its own light in the deep ocean pitch-dark waters. The animal has needle-like teeth and extendible jaws – this allows it to feed on prey half its size. At first sight, all these creatures have nothing in common whatsoever. But in reality, all of them are sharks! There are more than 500 shark species in the world, and lots of them don't look as if they're related. The most fearsome predators in the ocean, sharks have been around for more than 400 million years. They have adapted to all kinds of tough conditions. Most people would probably feel more comfortable without sharks lurking in the ocean depths. So what if there were no sharks? What would the oceans look like if all of the sharks disappeared? (Spoiler: That would turn into a disaster for our planet.) #brightside TIMESTAMPS:

Why Megalodon Would Fear Dolphins Today
Both of these animals live in the water. Other than that, there's little in common between them. A smaller one is a warm-blooded mammal, highly intelligent, and curious. Its long, streamlined body is usually either blue or gray, but there are also brown and even pink species. Ranging in size from 6 to 30 ft long, dolphins don't weigh more than 11 tons. Their slippery hairless skin – that feels rubbery to the touch – is probably their most famous feature. The other animal is a notorious pre-historic predator. Growing about 60 ft long, it weighed almost 5 times more than the largest dolphin. Its size, huge serrated teeth, and incredible speed – that's what made the meg the most feared creature in the ocean 23 to 3 and a half million years ago. So, the question is: who would you rather meet while swimming in the ocean, a dolphin or a megalodon? In comparison with the sharp-toothed monster, dolphins look cute and totally harmless. But is it really? Who would win, a shark or a dolphin? #brightside TIMESTAMPS:

Outer space is really big! And probably there's no way we can get to know it well enough. However, there's always a chance to learn more about it. As we find out various facts about planets, stars and galaxies, we realize how tiny we are. And some of these facts may be really fascinating!
