What Happens When an Airline Shuts Down

It happens more often than you’d think. An airline will pack up shop if it chooses to close… or runs out of money. The smaller ones are more at risk to go under because they typically make their money during the peak travel season. Most airlines will try to give you back all or at least part of your money. But this stuff’s not always a guarantee. Either way, it’ll be a headache! So no matter what airline you book with, it’s always good to have a backup plan. Also, you have rights as a traveler—get to know them! Even though they’re now shut down, they should still try to do what they can for customer service’s sake. But, of course, try to be understanding. Other videos you might like:

– Stay in the loop 3:10
– Still ask about hotel credits 4:01

– Did you book your flight with a credit card? 4:49
– Did you get travel insurance? 5:11
– Get your airline’s attention on social media! 5:41
– You CAN negotiate 6:08
– Save all your flight documents 6:35
– Always prepare for the worst 7:02 #airtravel #traveling #brightside SUMMARY:
– If the airline owns the plane, it’ll likely be sold or auctioned off. – If one of the airlines shuts down, the airport would try and control the chaos as much as possible. Think about it—they’d be dealing with a lot of angry people. – Keep track of your booking details online. It may not explicitly say, “Your airline has gone under!” But the sooner you know about a cancelation, the better you’ll be able to plan.
– As soon as you find out that your airline folded, call them directly to see what they can do as far as getting you on another flight. – If you book with a credit card, you might be able to get at least part of your money back or work something out with your travel miles. – Travel insurance can end up saving you money—you never know when a flight will be canceled! Not only for unexpected airline shutdowns but other common stuff like bad weather.
– Since it’s such a public platform, it’ll be someone’s job to watch and respond on the airline’s social media accounts. You’ll probably get a quicker response than on the phone. – If your airline closes and you call them to get a refund or better price on a re-booking, you might still feel that you got the short end of the stick. – Who knows—your airline may offer to give you your money back later, or you might need to use those documents to explain your situation and get another flight. – Make sure you’ve got plenty of extra cash, especially if you’re abroad. If you’re really left high and dry somewhere far from home, hostels are usually quite affordable. How a Tiny Island Changed the Way We Fly

Ilaitia Tabakaucoro is a Fijian man who worked as an air traffic controller in the early 90s. Around that time, he and some pilot buddies decided to take a quick hop across the water from Fiji's main island of Viti Levu to one of the smaller islands in the northeastern part of the archipelago. Not long after the main island disappeared behind them, their plane was struck by a crosswind that knocked it off course. They realized they were lost in the blue expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Things looked pretty dire before Tabakaucoro suddenly remembered that their plane had recently been equipped with GPS. This might seem like a mundane story but at the time, GPS was still relatively new… Other videos you might like:

Where Fiji enters the picture 4:44 #aviation #Fiji #brightside SUMMARY:
– From the 1940s until the late 80s, aircraft navigation relied on a combination of radar, radio, and just looking out the window to figure out where you were.
– Planes oriented themselves based on a combination of radio beacons and visual landmarks.
– Planes traveling any distance over the ocean would need to employ a crew member known as a flight navigator.
– One of the main methods was celestial navigation, and it wasn’t without fault. It relied on using the sun, moon, and stars to identify the plane's coordinates, but needed clear skies to be effective. – The first GPS satellite launched in 1978, with an additional twenty-three satellites launching over the following fifteen years. – The US government had considered making GPS technology available to the public.
– The government also made plans to increase the number of GPS satellites from fifteen to twenty-four. – The island nation had been a popular tourist destination for many years and showed no sign of slowing down in the early 90s.
– In 1994, Fiji approached the US and volunteered itself as a test market for commercial GPS technology.
– Fiji still needed to retrofit its entire commercial air fleet and train the crews on how to use the new equipment. But once that was done, it wasn't long before the country began reaping its rewards.
– Because GPS works just as well regardless of weather, planes no longer need to be turned around mid-flight due to poor visibility. – Prior to GPS becoming widely available, two jets flying the same route couldn't be less than one hundred miles apart. – Thanks to GPS, planes can now safely fly within twenty-three miles of each other, and the delay for successive flights has been cut down to only ten minutes.
– Another change is that planes no longer need to carry enough fuel to always return to their point of departure. – Needless to say, Fiji and the FAA were ecstatic to find out that their investment paid off. – GPS technology has made flights radically faster, safer, and, when adjusted for inflation, less expensive than they were as recently as thirty years ago. What If You Swallowed a Jellyfish

All over the world, but especially in Asia, jellyfish are a popular food. In fact, so many people swallow jellyfish — on purpose — that the world harvests almost 354,000 tons of them every year! In China, they even raise baby jellyfish in ponds and then move them to the ocean to increase the jellyfish population. But to swallow Mr. Jelly at the beach is a really bad idea for both of you. Even common jellyfish can make you really sick, and all jellyfish have stingers. You might not think so, because in some, the stingers are too short to pierce human skin. Those ones won’t hurt us. That is … unless you swallow them. Other videos you might like:

– The sensitive membranes inside your mouth and lining of your throat are thinner, and therefore easier to pierce than your skin.
– A teenage lifeguard in Australia was rushed to the hospital after he drank a jellyfish and tentacle infusion. – Someone at the surf club where he worked had saved a few tentacles of the extremely venomous Box Jellyfish in a jar of water and left it in the club refrigerator. – He was already having trouble breathing by the time the paramedics arrived. – Japan’s waters are teeming with “Nomura’s Jellyfish.” These guys weigh in at a colossal 450 pounds! They’re so big that when they get caught in a fisherman’s net, they can sink the ship! – Desalinated, Jellyfish don’t have much flavor, but they have hardly any fat and can add texture to food, or even be served alone if they’re dressed with something really spicy, like chili sauce.
– Health-nuts will even tell you that Jellyfish Chips are a fabulous alternative to the potato kind! – A lot of sea life, especially in the deep sea where it’s super-dark, have this amazing feature. Bioluminescence allows half of all jellyfish to glow! – Scientists believe that Bioluminescent Jellyfish use flashes of light to communicate; kind of like an underwater light house.
– People swallow jellyfish for medicinal and magical reasons too. Some think that eating them will ease muscle pain or improve memory. – As for magic, well, I’m not saying eating jellyfish powder will make that girl in math class fall in love with you, but the Chinese have been using dried jellyfish as a love potion for over 1700 years. A tip for travelers: turn off your phone’s location tracking! 7:25 #smartphonehacks #cellphone #brightside SUMMARY:
– If you notice that you’re not using an app anymore, uninstall it from your phone. – If you know you’re going to be in an area with bad reception, turning on Airplane Mode will save your battery.
– When you’re picking a phone case, get one that has a little plug for the charging port!
– Use a dry cotton cloth to clean the screen and the back, like what you might clean your glasses with. – Your phone can tell you a lot about its battery life! Your phone might also be able to tell you when you last charged it. – If your phone is hooked up to your charger and keeps charging after it’s reached 100%, it can drain the battery.
– Keep charging past that for hours while you’re in a deep slumber. In the morning you’ll find that your phone probably won’t stay at a very full battery for long!
– If there are any tears in the cord you haven’t noticed, or if it doesn’t fit just right in your phone’s charging port, you might be at risk for a spark. – Don't let your phone lose its battery completely before you charge it; just wait ‘til it gets below that 30% line. – If you keep using your phone while it’s plugged in, it won’t charge as quickly, and the battery will drain faster after you unplug it. – If it’s super cold or super hot, it’s not good for your phone. Either one can hurt its internal parts!
– If your screen is black, your phone doesn’t have to “work” to light up any brightly colored pixels.
– Yeah, it might get a little annoying unlocking your phone more often, but setting a 15 to 30-second timeout can go a long way! – Each time you light up your screen, it uses a little bit of battery. Think of how much battery you’re using just to check your screen that many times a day! Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz

Why Toilet Paper Is Only White

Let’s consider bathroom tissue if you will. C’mon it’ll be fun. Ther’s all kinds: embossed, three-ply, six-ply, scented — you name it. But whatever it is to the touch or sniff, it looks the same to the eye: white. So how come toilet paper has lost its color so dramatically? The first colored TP appeared in the 1950s, when decorating your bathroom in a single style was a thing. Toilet paper producers started dyeing their products in all possible colors so that people could complete the image of their bathrooms. The popularity of colored toilet paper reached its peak by 1970s, but sometime around the 1980s, personal hygiene shelves became gradually whiter, and by 2004 all color disappeared completely… Other videos you might like:

… and corn cobs 😲 8:22 #toiletpaper #hygiene #brightside SUMMARY:
– Several studies showed that the dye used in colored TP can be potentially dangerous. Dyes weren’t as strictly regulated 50-70 years ago, so manufacturers could basically add whatever coloring they wanted.
– Demand was failing, while the costs of production remained the same. People stopped going crazy about pink and violet bathrooms, opting for the more practical and “clean” white look.
– Environmental research also showed that dyed toilet paper isn’t a good thing.
– It turned out that dyed paper is slower to decompose in nature and is more difficult to dissolve in water. Basically, every time you flush down some amount of dyed TP, you face the risk of clogging the plumbing.
– If you come to France, you’ll see the personal hygiene shelves stacked mostly with pink toilet paper, not white, for your delicate derriere. – In Germany, you would find different patterns, and many Eastern European nations also experiment with colors. – There are countries and traditions, though, that don’t want to have anything with toilet paper at all, considering it dirty. – In India, for example, you probably won’t find TP in any stores because it’s not in their tradition. Instead of wiping yourself, you’re expected to use a bucket and a mug that are put there inside the bathroom for your comfort. – The most interesting (and by far the craziest by today’s standards) were the Ancient Greeks who used clay and stones for hygienic purposes.
– When Romans finished their business, they took the stick and washed themselves… returning it to the water bucket afterwards. And yes, the sponges were reusable. – Colonial Americans also had rather resourceful ways when it came to personal hygiene.
– Farmers took corn cobs into the bathroom with them. I guess they felt those things were better suited for the business. Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz

Where Is Planet 9?

People have always been dreaming of conquering other galaxies and exploring space far away from our home. But the thing is that there are enough enigmas in our own Milky Way galaxy! Even better, there is one right inside our Solar System! This mystery is lurking somewhere on the outskirts of the planetary system, puzzling astronomers to no end. Once upon a time, scientists noticed that something bizarre and inexplicable was causing chaos out there, in space. A mysterious celestial body was influencing the orbits of six smaller object in Kuiper Belt, far, far away from our home planet. This something got the name of "Planet Nine"… Other videos you might like:

– The thing is massive: more than 10 times bigger than Earth and around 5,000 times as large as Pluto! – Ice giants aren't as massive as gas giants but have a similar atmosphere. – We used to believe that Neptune is the furthest planet from the Sun. But now, it may turn out that Planet Nine is the champion, being 20 times further away from the center of the Solar System than Neptune! – If you lived on Planet Nine, your year would last 10,000 to 20,000 Earth's years!
– Until scientists see Planet Nine with their own eyes, they can't say for sure that it exists. But the evidence they have is quite solid.
– Scientists are looking for the planet using infrared equipment. If Planet Nine does exist, it's supposed to leak infrared radiation.
– But then, what if Planet Nine isn't a planet at all? The idea, which first appeared in 2019, suggests that the object that has created all this hullabaloo, might be… a black hole! – But even if this guess is correct, you have nothing to worry about: Earth isn't in danger. Primordial black holes are too small and weak to cause any serious harm to our planetary system. – A primordial black hole would explain why hypothetical Planet Nine can't be seen and doesn't produce infrared radiation.
– But one of the main reasons why astronomers would be ecstatic should Planet Nine turn out to be a primordial black hole is the mystery of dark matter!
– Primordial black holes could be the very dark matter astronomers are searching for! Or at least, a kind of dark matter named MACHOs (which stands for massive compact halo objects). Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz

Why Some Planes Have Backwards Wings

When you picture an airplane, a pretty familiar shape comes to mind. A long narrow body with two main wings sticking out from the middle, a pair of smaller wings on the back end, and a tail fin in the rear sticking straight up. The wings may be straight or swept to the back, but you wouldn't picture them sweeping forward, would you? Sure, some fighter jets have wings that change position, and older planes might have an extra pair in the front, but you wouldn't have a backward wing. Well, tell that to the X-29. This experimental aircraft was developed by NASA and the US Air Force back in 1984! Other videos you might like:

Animation is created by Bright Side. SUMMARY:
– The concept of forward-swept wings dates all the way back to the JU-287, developed in the 1940s, and many countries have experimented with this format over the years.
– Look at any plane developed before the advent of jet engines, and you’ll notice that almost all of them position their wings at a right angle to the body of the aircraft.
– This works great for any aircraft flying less than 460 mph, but causes trouble for anything moving faster than that.
– Unlike straight wings, where one hundred percent of the airflow moves parallel to the body of the plane, swept wings create a stream of air running lengthwise down the wing.
– The air moving across the top of the wing is called the chordwise flow, named after the chord, an imaginary line that goes from the front to the rear edge of the wings. – Some military jets, such as the American F-14 Tomcat, and Russian MiG-23, can change the angle of their wings to take advantage of this effect. – The issue that has yet to be resolved is that the further back the wings of a plane are swept, the more susceptible it is to a stall. – While forward-swept wings reduce drag quite significantly, their unusual aerodynamic properties subject them to a twisting motion as they move through the air.
– This brings us back to the X-29, the shining pinnacle of early eighties aircraft technology.
– Shortly before a test flight, one of the prototypes malfunctioned, causing all three computers to fail simultaneously.
– Ultimately, the X-29 program came to an end in 1991. Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz

What It Was Like to Fly in the 1930s (Passengers Slept in Real Beds!)

Getting on a plane to go somewhere today is almost as simple as catching a train or a taxi. But a century ago it was way more complicated. If you look at photos of aircraft passengers from the 30s, they’re rarely seen without their jackets or coats on. That wasn't just for the sake of fashion. It was really chilly inside since heated cabins were still rare back then. There were some things you couldn’t fix just by donning an extra layer of clothing. Remember those vomit bags that are still present on most jets, even though hardly anyone ever needs them anymore? They originated from a time when not puking during the flight was a real challenge. Planes were way more sluggish 3:02
How much did air travel cost back then? 4:54
Flying five-star hotel 5:52 #planes #aviation #brightside SUMMARY:
– The low pressure at high altitudes makes it more difficult for the body to absorb oxygen. Air travelers felt queasy and found it hard to breathe. ]
– But the first commercial plane with a pressurization system didn’t emerge until 1938.
– Another drawback of not having the normal pressure on board was turbulence. Without pressurization, pilots couldn’t rise further than 15,000 feet from the ground.
– In the 1930s, many aircraft had either weak or no soundproofing at all. So people onboard had to deal with the sound of wind blasting by, and roaring engines.
– During the 30s, one air trip from New York to Los Angeles took about 25 hours! – To get from one point to another, aviators needed to make over a dozen stops, as well as refuel a couple of times. – In 1938 you’d have to pay $243 for a week-long bumpy trip from London to Brisbane, Australia. That’s about $17,000 in today’s money! – And yet the 20s, and especially the 30s, were dubbed the golden age of flight, and for a reason.
– Passengers had big and comfortable seats, and passengers could gaze out windows that were much more similar to train windows than the tiny plane ones we’re used to today.
