Somewhere up there in space, about 12,000 miles above the surface of the planet, more than 30 GPS navigation satellites orbit Earth. Thanks to them, you don't need to use the sun, moon, and constellations to find your way! People depend on GPS much more than you might think. One of the reasons why GPS satellites are so crucial for people is because they carry onboard atomic clocks. And those are the very clocks which are responsible for all the time in the world! Should they malfunction, it would bring an end to pretty much everything, from electric power grids to the internet, digital TV and radio, and cellular communication. So how bad would it be if GPS suddenly stopped working? Other videos you might like:

👉 Cool GPS satellite facts 👈 7:15 #GPS #whatif #brightside SUMMARY:
– You don't notice anything unusual at first. You wake up, take a hot shower, and prepare your breakfast as always. – You get into your car and find out that your GPS doesn't work. – You finally arrive at the office and switch on your computer. The first thing you notice is that the internet is excruciatingly slow.
– What you DON'T know is that all the GPS satellites in the world stopped functioning at night, and now, the world is struggling to live without them.
– All over the world, planes go off course and crash, and ships head straight toward rocks, cliffs, and icebergs. – The world governments started to arrange emergency meetings. They're trying to figure out a way to deal with the disaster of losing GPS.
– All the traffic lights have switched to the default red, and the streets of the city have turned into one big, unmoving traffic jam. – Transport, finance, communications, computers – the loss of GPS satellites has influenced all areas of life
– If all the GPS satellites went out of order in one day, the world's technological development would go back decades. – This very situation has already happened once, and it was in January of 2016!
– Due to a maintenance error, sixteen satellites had their clocks set incorrectly. – Luckily, specialists managed to tackle these problems fast enough. – So far, people have launched 74 GPS satellites. – The minimum number of GPS satellites needed to support the whole Global Positioning System is 24.
– Before being called GPS, this system had the name Navstar.
– And although it seems like your car has been using GPS forever, this innovation didn’t appear for everyday vehicles until 1996!
– Nowadays, you can buy GPS shoes to make sure someone will find you if you get lost. But jokes aside, these shoes have been designed to track people with memory problems. Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz

I Lived Like a Millionaire for 30 Days, See Where It Got Me
Hey there! You know these tips on how to become a millionaire by adopting certain habits? Well, I decided to challenge myself and start an experiment to check if this is for real. I adopted the rich people’s habits and tried to keep up such a routine for a month, recording my progress on video. And you know what? It was an interesting experience. Although I don’t think I can keep it up any longer, I’ll certainly take some habits into my everyday routine from now on. I’m pretty sure they’ll bring positive change to my life. My first morning 0:24
How I spent my time after work 2:41
My results after two weeks 3:27
My evening ritual 4:27
The last day of my month-long challenge 5:23
So what can I say? 7:04 #success #productivity #brightside SUMMARY:
– This is the first morning of my challenge, and it’s REALLY early now. Like, 5 a.m. early.
– I want my morning joe now, but not yet. Up next is a bit of exercise. – Scrambled eggs and a cup of coffee have never tasted so delicious! Alright, I’ve done my morning routine in just under half an hour, so it’s 5.30 a.m. now and I need to get down to business. – I think I’ll go check my emails now. And there’s also a bit of cleaning up, washing the dishes…
– It’s 12.45 p.m., and I’ve done a lot of things already, but it seems my morning boost is wearing off. I feel… drowsy, at best. – Junk food is on the blacklist now, so I’ll have a healthier snack. A bowl of fresh salad and some nuts seem a good enough option.
– The lunch didn’t really help — I think my tiredness has to do with the fact that I turned in late yesterday. – After a day at work, I’d normally have some junk for dinner and either lie in front of a TV for a couple of hours or take my laptop and idly browse the web. Now, though, I have to change this habit.
– Okay, fine, dinner first. Something light and healthy, and I’ll have to eat in silence — no TV allowed. There are literally no thoughts in my head now, I just want to sleep. – It’s been two weeks since I’ve started my challenge, and today I’d like to share my progress with you. So, I still get up at 5 a.m., and I’ve found it pretty convenient.
– By lunch time I still lose most of my energy, and I feel like it’s getting worse. – The best parts of the day are when I get to check off a point from my to-do list. It gives me so much satisfaction!
– When I’m done compiling my next-day plan, I take a quick cool shower — cold water makes you want to burrow between the sheets, and that’s exactly what I do. – When I’m warm and cozy enough to fall asleep, I turn off the lights and call it a day. – So today’s the last day of my month-long challenge, and I must admit it’s been tough. Waking up has been growing steadily more and more difficult, and now I’m looking forward to getting some sleep. – I do most of the important stuff before lunch if I can because after 1 p.m., it’s as if someone turns off my lights.
– When I come home in the evening, I’m downright exhausted. Even crossing out the things I’ve done doesn’t make my day.
– The experiment went not exactly as I thought it would.
– I hadn’t enough strength for my own leisure activities. And that’s a major mistake because you need to have time for yourself, or you’d just burn out one day.
– My mornings became much more productive, and I think that, if I had just half an hour to take a nap after 1 p.m., I’d be cool as a cucumber for the rest of the day too.
– I don’t think I’ll ever go back to watching TV after work — well, at least not so often as before. Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz

What Happens to Planes After Retirement
Do you think that the newer an airplane, the safer the flight? Not quite. Modern commercial aircraft are very robust. One of the oldest commercial airplanes, a Boeing 737-200, made its first flight 40 years ago and still makes 3-4 regular flights a day! But what happens to the retired aircraft? There are several options for airplanes that don't fly anymore. One of the most common options is simply storage. The most ideal places for this purpose of storing airliners are deserts with dry climates, where the planes won't rust too quickly. But what happens to airplanes after they arrive? Why an Eye Icon Sometimes Appears on Phones
It may seem that you know everything about your smartphone: all its knacks, glitches, and icons. But occasionally, especially if you're an Android owner, or if you have just had a software update or installed a new, unfamiliar app, your cell phone might surprise you. You unlock it and – ta-da! – there is an eye, staring at you from the top of the screen! Everybody knows the meaning of a small radar sign at the top of the screen! Yep, that's the famous Wi-Fi symbol, loved by many! It appears when you connect to Wi-Fi networks at home, in a coffee shop, or at an airport. But what if a symbol has the same shape as the Wi-Fi icon but is black and has an exclamation mark on it? So, here’s how to decode those and other icons on your screen. Other videos you might like:

Two vertical arrows facing opposite directions 1:50
The capital letter "R" 2:05
A little triangle next to the signal bars 2:38
A star symbol 2:52
A tiny telephone with a keyboard next to it 3:12
An ear that seems to be crossed 3:35
A symbol that resembles a curvy capital letter N 4:00
An upside-down teardrop 4:23
A plus inside a circle 4:54
A rectangle with three curved lines 5:21
An eye 5:46
A Wi-Fi symbol coming out of a phone receiver 6:40
A square with some mountains inside 7:00
The symbol of a screenshot with an exclamation mark on it 7:18
A small arrow at the top of the screen 7:41 #smartphone #phonesecrets #brightside SUMMARY:
– If your phone shows you two horizontal arrows, one over the other and pointing in the opposite directions, it means that your network is testing (or has already launched) Voice-over-LTE service.
– If a symbol has the same shape as the Wi-Fi icon but is black and has an exclamation mark on it, it means that your gadget uses the Smart Network Switching option.
– One day, you may see the capital letter "R" appear next to your phone's signal bars. It means that your device has managed to connect to a different network – not its regular one.
– A star symbol means that you've enabled "Do not disturb" mode on your phone. Instead of a star, there might be a no-entry sign on your gadget.
– A tiny telephone with a keyboard next to it means that you have activated TTY, which stands for teletypewriter. Thanks to this feature, instead of talking, you can type your messages, which makes communication easier for people who have issues with speaking or hearing. – Also, if you see an icon with an ear that seems to be crossed and a tiny capital letter "T" next to it, you've switched on the hearing aid mode.
– When you see a symbol that resembles a curvy capital letter N on the screen, your NFC (which stands for Near Field Communication) is switched on. – An upside-down teardrop at the top of your phone's screen not only indicates that your GPS is turned on but also informs you that one of your applications is using your current location at the moment. – If you're an Android owner and have noticed a plus inside a circle (which actually looks like a 75% of a circle), you have the Data Saver mode on.
– Another sign an Android device owner may once see at the top of the screen is a rectangle with three curved lines. This is the "Cast Screen" icon.
– If you're an owner of a Samsung device, one day, you might notice an eye, which might be surrounded by eyelashes or not, staring back at you from the top of the screen. It means that the Smart Stay feature is enabled on your phone. – A square with some mountains inside informs you about a successfully made screenshot.
– But then, what’s this icon that has the symbol of a screenshot with an exclamation mark on it? This sign warns you that your phone hasn't been able to save the image.
– A small arrow at the top of the screen on Apple phones means that you're using location services. Most often, you'll see this arrow when you have an app with maps open on your device. Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz

The Day Before Christmas
Oh, the weather outside is frightful… but Christmas is so delightful! Leslie felt it in the air as she walked down the street. She was headed to her favorite store that only opened nearer to the winter holidays and had all kinds of wonderful stuff. She cherished this knowledge as something very close and personal: the store was small and not really well-known because of its peculiar schedule, so Leslie felt as if she was touching upon some secret. But her singing mood was brought up short when she saw the “For rent” sign on the shop window. She couldn’t believe her eyes. It seemed to her that the world suddenly stopped spinning. Upset and downtrodden, she already turned to leave, thinking about what she would do now when she noticed a small piece of paper tucked between the door and the jamb… 🎅 Guys, there are 14 Christmas hats hidden in the video! Are you attentive enough to spot them? 🎅😜 Other videos you might like:

And it was THAT Alec! 7:16
An incredible encounter 7:49 #touchingstory #christmasstory #brightside SUMMARY:
– Deep in his anxious thoughts, Alec barely noticed stepping onto something soft but springy. It was s wallet. Inside was a hefty stack of hundred-dollar bills… and a photograph.
– Marissa woke up covered in cold sweat and sheets clinging to her wet skin. Another nightmare, this time about Ben — she didn’t exactly remember what it was about, but something horrible happened. – Leslie took the sheet and unfolded it. Inside was a note from the owner of the store that read, “Whoever finds this, please call me” — and a number.
– “Um, is it Marissa? Yes, my name’s Alec, I’ve found a wallet in the street with your photo and phone number in it. Oh, it’s your brother’s? Well, there’s… like, a lot of money in here, and I thought it would be nice if the owner got it back".
– Marissa had a short day today, but there was some stuff she needed done at the office — a mortgage and a business loan that she couldn’t get her hands on for a long time now.
– Leslie just headed home. And it would’ve been a short and uneventful walk if she hadn’t bumped into someone big. She murmured an apology, looked at the stranger and her eyes got huge.
– The place looked grim and deserted. Alec opened it every year before Christmas, just to put his mind at ease — more of a hobby than business, really. – “Alec? It’s Marissa. I’m looking at your loan request form right now… Yep, I’m kinda your accountant, I guess. Look, I couldn’t approve it, but… where can I find you? It’s not a phone talk. Okay, gotcha. See you in a jiffy.”
– Leslie looked at Ben in shock. They’d been in love in college, but he disappeared after graduation — some terrible family business that overwhelmed him. – She couldn’t have corrected it herself, and by all means she should’ve rejected it, but given the circumstances… and then another knock on the door.
– Marissa stepped from behind the counter, waved at Ben and stopped short. Right beside her brother was her long-time business partner, Leslie. No. Way. This was just too much!
– So it turned out they all knew each other this way or that. Haven’t met in years, but here they were.
– Marissa looked at Ben, Ben looked at Leslie, and she gingerly touched his hand. Something good was being born there that day — the day before Christmas. Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz

A Desert Town of 80 People That’s Only 5% Complete
Imagine this: you’re driving around the Arizona desert, about an hour north of Phoenix, when suddenly, you see a city rising above the sands. It’s all made of giant futuristic arches and looks pretty much empty. All this sounds like a sci-fi movie plot, but it is, in fact, real! The experimental town of Arcosanti is located 70 miles away from Phoenix, at an elevation of 3,700 feet. Its construction was started in 1970, and never actually finished. Right now, the town is only 5% complete, even though there’s constantly work going on out there. Other videos you might like:

What you can see in the city 5:46
Btw, life there isn't' boring at all 7:15 #ecology #Arcosanti #brightside SUMMARY:
– The idea belonged to Paolo Soleri, an Italian-American architect. – Soleri believed that instead of building out, people should build up, and that cities shouldn’t be designed around cars, but around humans.
– He came up with the idea of “arcology”. “Arcology” is actually a blend of architecture and ecology. – “Arcology” despises cars and roads: everything you could possibly need should be within walking distance. – Elevators, escalators, and moving walkways would be the only kind of transportation you’d need to go places. – Soleri believed all the buildings and their inhabitants must interact as cells, tissues, and organs in a highly evolved organism.
– A lot of students, architects, journalists, filmmakers and other enthusiasts believed in his concept and the idea of working hard to bring it to life. – It soon turned out that some of his ideas were too expensive to bring to life, which slowed the process down.
– Today, 40 years later, the construction still hasn’t been completed, and there are around 80 people still living and working in Soleri’s new urban concept testing ground.
– As you go for a walk, you’ll see 12 other major constructions, including an amphitheater, a lab, a pool, a music center, a crafts center, and housing for residents and guests.
– Residents are allowed to have 12 cats and eight dogs, so you’ll see quite a few pets in Arcosanti. – Around half of the population is “semi-transient”, which means they plan to spend somewhere between 6 months and 5 years here, but no longer. – If life in Arcosanti sounds boring to you so far, here’s something you should know: Around 50,000 people from across the world visit the place every year. – Arcosanti gets most visitors during concerts and festivals that are held in the local amphitheater. Their most famous festival is FORM. – The Cosanti Foundation is now responsible for the Arcosanti project. Its co-president, Jeff Stein, says although they might never be able to actually house 5,000 people like it was originally planned, Arcosanti can play a really important part for the future of our planet. How Cars Have Changed Over 100 Years
The first actual road vehicle in history was the steam-powered car invented by Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot. It was first intended for military purposes. It had only three wheels and was more of a tractor than an actual car. It was a heavy vehicle, capable of moving at only 2.5 mph, but it was a breakthrough nonetheless. It was in 1769. But the first proper car was invented in 1886, and there are two people sharing the honor. These were a gas-powered automobile with three wheels made by Karl Friedrich Benz and a more traditional four-wheeled vehicle made by Gottlieb Daimler. Both were experiments of talented engineers, and… they were quite successful! Other videos you might like:

– We’ve just jumped to the year 1891, and you can see lots of Peugeot cars around us. All of them run on engines patented by Benz and Daimler, who built their initial capital on selling those.
– Let’s take a quick stroke across the US: here, in 1893, which is already before our current time, brothers Charles and Frank Duryea assembled their first gas-powered car and soon became the largest car manufacturers in the United States.
– Curved Dash Oldsmobiles were the first mass-produced cars in the USA. Ransom Eli Olds invented the assembly line prototype and moved to Detroit to start his enterprise. – By 1927, Ford has produced over 15 million of these cars, and improved them with every passing year, making them more efficient and comfortable, while still affordable. – Look at that beauty! It’s Duesenberg Model J — the most luxurious and powerful car of the first half of the century! Just imagine: its engine produced 265 horsepower, and a supercharged version reached 320!
– It’s 1965, and the car industry is booming. What you see on either side from us are Fords, Chevrolets, Chryslers, and DeSotos.
– We’re in the ‘70s, and it’s muscle cars galore. There’s not a single smooth line in those cars, it’s pure testosterone. They’re mean, they’re powerful, they’re awesome.
– We’re now in the ‘90s, and it’s the era of the global economic crisis. Muscle cars are in the past now, and people need simpler, more affordable vehicles. – In the 2000s, things grow even worse. Just look at these guys — they look like submarines without a single straight line.
– The 2010s. Almost our time. Japan has dominated the field of car design, and everyone else started copying them. – It’s the year 2070, and cars are, well, different. More than half of them are flying, while others move on magnetic force.

Old Cars VS New Cars

What If Everyone on Earth Looked the Same
Picture this: it’s a beautiful morning, and you woke up to the sound of birds chirping through your half-opened window. You look out the window see a few people walking by. But there’s a problem. They all look the same. With identical skin and hair color, when you look closer, even their face is the same. You are in a world filled with identical humans… It’s as if a factory produced humans in the same way dolls are manufactured – minus the package, of course. These identical creatures come into the world naturally, but they don’t just have a name. They also have a number. So, what would the world be like if it were possible? How would you identify all your friends and relatives? Other videos you might like:

Animation is created by Bright Side. SUMMARY:
– In the parallel universe #12, every person is born with the same face.
– To keep the world in order, the government came up with a numerical system that gave each person a number. – To make sure that nobody lost their unique identity, they had tiny microchips placed in their chests.
– When you become friends with someone, the chips connected through something like Bluetooth. – The world of social media in this parallel Universe is completely different from what we’re used to. The accounts aren’t based on photos but on intelligence. – If you all look like every other person, you have to use your achievements and intelligence to have it.
– You see, in this world, only your achievements and character could make you different, so people used that to their advantage.
– Us humans like to label people who have a different appearance. And we usually pick on the negative. We categorize individuals on the way they look, and their weight.
– Creativity in that world is limited. It’s hard to imagine something different when you are exposed to the same stimuli. – People began changing their bodies and postures to help them stand out. – I began to realize that this perfect society wouldn’t last long. People were desperate about having a unique identity, so they were working hard to get it. – If everyone looked the same, it might solve a lot of problems, but it would also create new ones. The sciences would probably sky-rocket, but creativity could go either way. Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz
