A Man Who Flew Faster Than the Speed of Sound

If someone would’ve told us a long time ago that humans could travel faster than the speed of sound, we’d nod our heads in disbelief and laugh. Breaking the sound barrier was as mind-boggling as superman’s ability to defy gravity. But what if I told you that a man achieved this impossible feat more than 70 years ago? So, who is this guy? How did he manage to travel faster than the speed of sound? Future legend, Charles “Chuck” Yeager, was born in 1923. When he graduated from school, he enrolled in the Army Air Corps. He was great with coordination, and he could carry out almost any task without any difficulty. In March of 1943, he finally got his wings to fly away. Within a year he’d managed to fly more than 270 hours around Europe. In just a few years he’d be able to travel faster than the speed of sound. And, that wasn’t an easy task… Other videos you might like:

How Chuck achieved the impossible 7:41
… and how he did it again at… 89 years old! 10:30 #aviation #planes #brightside SUMMARY:
– Chuck grew up in a small town in West Virginia called Hamlin, and he was the second-born son of Susie and Albert Yeager. He had a very peaceful upbringing, and he sure enjoyed being active and curious. – His dad owned a natural gas drilling business in Hamlin. There, Chuck developed a passion for generators, pumps and pressure regulators. – In 1941, Chuck graduated from school; and in September of that year, he enrolled in the Army Air Corps, a choice that would change his life forever.
– He had the whole flying package, and when his training started; he took off…literally and figuratively speaking. His eyesight was 20/10 which was remarkable.
– In March of 1943, he finally got his wings to fly away. Within a year he’d managed to fly more than 270 hours around Europe.
– Scientifically speaking, the sound barrier is a sudden rise in aerodynamic force that happens when an aircraft approaches the speed of sound.
– While the world of aviation was taking off, engineers were trying to figure out a way to build airplanes that could approach the speed of sound without breaking into pieces.
– The speed of sound is Mach 1, which is equivalent to 761 miles per hour. But even at Mach 0.8 (613 mph), the shockwaves that were building up were still dangerous for the aircraft. – The X-1 had only one mission – to break the sound barrier. So, it had to retain all its fuel in order to make the speed and travel faster than sound. – It was on October 14th, 1947, right after 10:30 in the morning. Yeager courageously boarded the aircraft, and the mothership took off. At 20,000 feet the X-1 was released from the B-29.
– Chuck had achieved the impossible. He had broken the sound barrier, and travelled faster than the speed of sound.
– In 2012, at 89 years old, 65 years after breaking the Sound Barrier, Chuck Yeager did it again. He flew a McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle and he hit 1.3 Mach, like a true aviation champion. Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz

What Small Triangles Above Your Airplane Seats Mean

Many of us think flying is a great way to travel, but things can get dull if you wind up stuck on the tarmac waiting for takeoff. While you're sitting there wondering if it would’ve taken any longer just to drive, you might notice a little triangular sticker above your window. Only four windows on each plane are marked this way. Usually red or black, the decals are just large enough to spot if you're looking for them but easy enough to miss if you aren't. But why are they there? Is it part of a conspiracy? Well, it turns out the answer isn’t quite so dramatic but interesting nonetheless. Especially if you're a plane lover! Other videos you might like:

– If you look closely the next time you're on a plane, you'll realize that the triangles line up with the front and back edges of the aircraft's wings.
– The sticker is there so that the flight attendants know at a glance which windows to look through. – Many airliners feature a hidden compartment where its exhausted crew can catch up on some much-needed sleep.
– The exact placement of the room varies, but the crew’s quarters are usually found in a small windowless compartment directly above first class. – Larger planes can feature up to ten bunks, as well as a separate pilot’s quarters directly above the cockpit. – If you’re flying in a jet made by Airbus, you might’ve noticed a pair of little yellow loops sticking up from the otherwise smooth, white surface of the plane's wing.
– A plane's wings need to be smooth so that they remain aerodynamic, but that makes them pretty difficult to stand on. – Thanks to this fabulous technological breakthrough, evacuating passengers need not worry about an unfortunate tumble down the aircraft’s wings. – Airliners need to maintain internal pressure for the passengers to be able to breathe comfortably at high altitudes.
– This tiny opening is known as a breather hole and plays a vital role in keeping you flying.
– Most airliners flying today feature a handrail running the length of the overhead compartments. Their primary function is so that the crew can safely move about the cabin during turbulence.
– The most common complaint people have with air travel is the lack of space. Even if you aren't particularly tall, you've probably experienced this for yourself.
– If you're in the middle seat, well, you're just going to have to deal with getting the worst of both worlds.
– Feel around on the bottom of the armrest, and you’ll find a little button near the hinge. Press it, and you're free to move that pesky armrest out of your way.
– This gives you plenty of room to move around, and is a big help when you’re trying to get your bag from the overhead compartment at the end of your flight. Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz

What to do When You See an Injured Bird

Have you ever seen a bird flapping around in your yard or on the sidewalk, and wondered if it needs help? What could you possibly do in this situation? As it turns out, there are ways to determine whether it’s in trouble, and what steps to take if it is. Remember that a healthy bird won’t let itself be caught in an open area. The fact that you’ve managed to catch the bird means that it’s ill or injured. The only exclusion here is a fledgling – a young bird that falls out of the nest because it can’t fly well enough yet. You can recognize them by prominent parts at both edges of the beak and a lot of tubes in the tail because this is usually the last part to grow. Other videos you might like:

❗️ Hygiene rules ❗️ 5:56
The basic rules for all species 6:43 #birds #SaveBirds #brightside SUMMARY:
– Some species pretend to be injured to lead you away from the nest.
– Even an injured bird can be really difficult to catch. It might have broken feathers, be dragging its wings, or move in small jumps, flying just above the ground.
– If you just take the injured bird and bring it home, you’re probably not helping its chances of survival. – Depending on the bird’s species and the severity of the illness or injury, it might take months, or even years, to find a home for it. – Even if you don’t see wounds or blood right away, try to examine it thoroughly, pulling apart the feathers.
– If parts of bones can be seen through the wound, the bird has an open fracture. – If the wing or leg doesn’t move, is twisted unnaturally, or has bruises or bumps, it’s likely the bird has a closed fracture.
– If the bird is lying on its belly with its legs cast away, this usually means that it has a spinal injury. – When several feathers are missing in the wings or tail, it’s a minor injury, since feathers will grow back, and the bird will be able to fly away. – Birds with a head injuries can often be found near glassy shop windows or on roads where they’ve been hit by a car.
– To transport the bird, prepare a ventilated box with a soft towel at the bottom. Put on thick gloves, take the bird gently but firmly, and put it into the box.
– Clean the box or cage where you keep the bird as often as you can; don’t let excrements get dry and spread in the air.
– Don’t keep the bird close to your children or pets. Isolate it if you can. When the bird gets better, ask the vet if you can let it out or not. In some cases, the injuries are so severe that it’ll never be able to live in the wild again. Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz

Don’t Shower with Contact Lenses On

Ah, contact lenses… Without them, all you see is a bunch of blurry figures and shapes. You can't go without them, so you'd gladly never take your contacts out. Yes, they’re a real life-saver, but there are places and situations when you’d better go contact-free! For example, even seemingly clear ocean, lake, or river water is swimming in microorganisms that are really dangerous for your eyes. In fact, bacteria find it easier to stick to your contacts than they do directly to your eyeballs. Once they grab on, they start to multiply and grow stronger. This is really bad for your eyes and can even lead to… blindness. Other videos you might like:

πŸ‘‰ Things you should never do if you’re a lens-wearer πŸ‘ˆ 6:10 #Healthyeyes #eyehealth #brightside SUMMARY:
– The cornea is the curved transparent layer that forms the front of the eye. Besides providing protection, it’s also key for vision since it bends and focuses the light that enters the eye.
– The disease starts with pain in the eyes and blurred vision. If you do nothing about it, it can even lead to blindness! – Although the condition is quite rare and affects only 1 out of 250,000 people, it’s still not a risk worth taking. – If there’s no way for you to avoid showering with your contacts in, at least try to keep your eyes closed as much as you can. – Before taking a dive in the pool, remember that you also have a second reason to take those contacts out – chlorine in the water can seriously damage them. – When you're getting in a good workout, sweat is always there to prove it. It gets on your back, your hands, the machine you're using, and, most dangerously, your eyes.
– When you're done with your workout and head to the shower, you have two equally undesirable options: either shower with your contacts in or take them out in the locker room.
– Even if you’re diligent about washing your hands, the odds that those fingers of yours are covered in bacteria as you rub your eyes at the end of a long work or school day, are pretty high. – A 2012 study showed that people who sleep in their contact lenses even less than once a week have a 6.5 times higher risk of getting keratitis than people who take their contacts out for the night.
– Bacteria growth aside, that thin piece of plastic covering your eye all night also impedes the flow of oxygen. – Contact lens solution is a great disinfectant when used wisely.
– Bacteria enjoy moisture, so one sure way to prevent their feast is to deprive them of that. Leaving the case to air out during the day will help.
– You’re putting on eye makeup and a tiny bit of it accidentally gets onto your contact. In case that happens, immediately wash your hands. – Your eyes don’t start itching and get red for no reason. If they feel dry, you have an infection, or are having an allergic reaction, remove your contacts immediately to prevent more damage. – If you rub your eyes with contacts in, you have an increased risk of developing keratoconus. – Your contacts don’t like water, and they don’t prefer the heat either. If you just take them out for the night, don’t leave the case where the sun will shine directly on it the next morning. She Claimed to Be a Titanic Survivor But Nobody Believed Her

We’ve heard the miraculous accounts from survivors of Titanic, painting a vivid picture of that harrowing night. They’ve all given us their unique personal experiences – except for one. Her name was Berthe Antonine Mayne, and when she told people about her life-changing cruise on the unsinkable ship; nobody believed her. Her story was discovered more than 50 years later when her nephew found a box in her closet with several clippings, photographs, and letters. So, why did everybody doubt her tale? Well, there’s a reasonable explanation. Oh, btw, this story isn't about the sinking of the Titanic only but also about big love… Other videos you might like:

– Mayne was born in Brussels on the 21st of July, 1887. She became a cabaret singer in Brussels under the stage name Bella Vielly. She was very talented.
– In the winter months of 1911, she met the love of her life. His name was Quigg Baxter, and he was a professional hockey player from Montreal, Canada. – One night, Baxter was vacationing in Brussels with his mother and sister. The moment Mayne walked on stage, and their eyes met, she knew he was the one. It was love at first sight. – Baxter was going to return to Canada with her on the Titanic in April of 1912; and that meant that his and Mayne’s relationship would have to come to end. The thought devastated him.
– He refused to leave Europe until the love of his life went with him. – He secretly booked another cabin for her: number C-90, which was located right below his room. In order to make sure that nobody knew about it, he changed her name to “Mrs. De Villiers”. – On the night of the accident, Baxter was sitting in his room with his sister, when suddenly they felt the crash, and the ship stopped. – His family hadn’t even known that she was on-board the Titanic, or that they were a couple to begin with. So, as soon as they got to the lifeboat, he re-introduced them. – Baxter waved at his family as they were lowered to the ocean at 1:10 am. There were only 29 people on board, and things were tense among them. – When they were taken to New York, they searched excessively for Baxter, but he was never found. His love and his family were devasted. – Mayne moved back to Europe and continued being a cabaret singer. This time it was in Paris. – She never got married or had any children. When she retired, she moved to a country house in the suburbs of Brussels.
– Mayne recounted how she was on-board the Titanic with a Canadian millionaire, but that story seemed way too far-fetched to be the truth. – After she passed away, her nephew went to her house and went through a few of her things. Before long, he discovered a mysterious shoebox in the closet. Inside was all the evidence to back up her unbelievable story. Why Planes Don’t Fly Over the Pacific Ocean

Why do airlines avoid the Pacific Ocean? You might think it was a safety issue. The Pacific is the largest and deepest of the world’s oceans. If a plane encounters a problem over a seemingly endless and bottomless pond of water, the pilots are going to have a rough time finding a safe spot to set her down. Guessing that it is a safety precaution wouldn't be entirely wrong. When planning a route, many pilots prefer to maximize the number of airports along their path. Emergencies are incredibly rare relative to how many planes take to the skies every day. That said, it isn’t the main reason airlines tend to avoid making a straight shot east to west… Other videos you might like:

But how do people get to Australia? 5:08
Turbulence over water 6:01
Flying with a jet stream VS. flying into it 6:27
What clear-air turbulence is 7:46 #planes #aviation #brightside SUMMARY:
– When planning a route, many pilots prefer to maximize the number of airports along their path.
– Excluding special circumstances such as passing through the jet streams or other meteorological concerns, the fastest route is almost always the one closest to a straight line.
– On a 2D map, making a giant rainbow to avoid the Pacific Ocean looks like a much longer route. But since the Earth is a sphere, a straight line is going to look very different in three-dimensional spaces. – The combination of the two factors, the curvature of the Earth and its extra equatorial width, mean that curving toward the poles is a shorter distance than flying (what seems like on a map) “straight” across!
– Another reason planes will sometimes brave an oceanic voyage is to take advantage of the smoother ride. Even in clear weather, there’s much less turbulence over water than over land.
– The other primary consideration for determining flight paths are air currents, namely the jet streams. These high-altitude air currents exist near the top of the troposphere.
– There are 4 main jet streams, 2 in each hemisphere, and thanks to the Earth’s rotation, they mostly flow west to east. – Flying with a jet stream can shave several hours off of a trip, but flying into it can slow the plane down considerably. – It’s also worth noting the risks associated with jet streams. The biggest hazard is a kind of turbulence known as clear-air turbulence, which occurs along the edges of the streams.
– The jet stream mostly affects things tens of thousands of feet in the air, and the curvature of the Earth doesn’t really matter unless you’re traveling hundreds of miles per hour over vast distances. Hurricane, Tornado, Cyclone – What’s the Difference?

What is the difference between a tornado and a hurricane? And what about typhoon? First, let’s get it straight: all these weather phenomena have to do with strong winds. Not my-umbrella-got-torn-from-my-hands strong, mind you, but rather my-house-got-blown-away-to-the-Land-of-Oz kind of thing. Yet before we get to the actual difference between hurricanes and typhoons, we must understand that they’re one and the same thing called a tropical cyclone. If you live in moderate or colder climates, there’s nothing for you to worry about, even if your house is right by the seaside, because you’ll only hear about cyclones from the news. After all, they’re called tropical for a reason: they only form in tropical or subtropical areas, because they need warm water to get things going. Other videos you might like:

– A tropical cyclone is a huge mass of clouds that gather in the sky and start rotating counter clock-wise due to very low air pressure. – Cyclones occur much more often than you think! But only few of them grow large and strong enough to become hurricanes or typhoons.
– The weakest version of a tropical cyclone is called a tropical depression. It’s a similar swirling mass of clouds, usually accompanied by storms, but the force of winds in it is not very high. – When the winds are stronger than 39 mph, the cyclone is then called a tropical storm. This is a more serious threat, and you’ll do well to hide inside your house because gusts of wind might reach 72 mph. – And only if the wind gets even more powerful than that, then it can be called a hurricane or a typhoon.
– If a severe tropical cyclone with wind speeds of over 75 mph occurs in the North Atlantic or North-East Pacific, it’s called a hurricane. If it’s in the North-West Pacific, then it’s a typhoon.
– We hear more about hurricanes than typhoons because the Atlantic Ocean is warmer than the Pacific, and warm water acts like a fuel for cyclones.
– Tornadoes can form almost anywhere they please, both over sea and over land. But there’s much more to it than that.
– A tornado is a swirling funnel of air coming down from the sky. It appears during thunderstorms, and it’s rather a consequence than a reason for severe weather. – But despite its terrible power, a tornado is a very local event, and short-lived at that. The biggest one ever registered by scientists was just over 1.5 mi in diameter and lasted about an hour or so.
– The center, in its turn, is usually calm and windless — so calm, in fact, that it’s almost creepy. It’s called the eye of the tornado or the hurricane, and it’s basically the safest place to be when the phenomenon comes to you.
– There are 5 categories of hurricanes according to the National Weather Service. Category 1 is just slightly more intense than a tropical storm, and in some countries it’s still considered as such. – Category 2 is another story altogether. The wind blows at speeds of up to 109 mph, and that’s where the real trouble starts.
– When a hurricane grows to Category 3, it’s already a disaster. First of all, it’s big. Secondly, it’s powerful. The winds are reaching 129 mph, and catching such a gust is like being hit with a race car.
– A Category 4 major hurricane is something you don’t want to see with your own eyes. With gusts of wind up to 157 mph, it can tear trees from the ground and hurl fairly large objects in the air, causing lots of damage. – And finally, a Category 5 major hurricane is a thing to be avoided at all costs. In other classifications it’s even called a super typhoon or a super cyclonic storm, which says a lot.
