What Happened with the Most Beautiful Woman That Ever Lived

She captivated millions on both sides of the Atlantic. She was even dubbed “the most beautiful woman that ever lived.” Her life behind the scenes was as enigmatic as her image on screen. So, what ever happened to silent-film star Greta Garbo after all that success? The Swedish actress never really liked talking to the press. You know what she famously said when asked about her personal life? “I was born. I had a mother and father. I went to school. What does it matter?” And still, her younger days in Sweden affected her deeply. If not for them, she probably wouldn’t have found her calling at all… TIMESTAMPS:

Animation is created by Bright Side. SUMMARY:
– Her dad passed, leaving her family of now 4 in unimaginable financial hardship. She desperately had to earn a living, so she started working at a department store. – Once she started acting in commercials in 1920, her path to the big screen was now wide open. – Greta enrolled in acting school at Stockholm’s Royal Dramatic Theater. When she graduated in 1924, she was discovered by one of Sweden’s leading directors, Mauritz Stiller.
– He was also the one who insisted she use a stage name. After all, “Gustafsson” didn’t exactly roll off the tongue, and the difficult pronunciation would make the aspiring actress’s name hard to remember.
– And soon enough, her fame would go trans-Atlantic. In 1925, the famous American film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer offered Stiller to work in Hollywood.
– But it was a time when talent wasn’t enough for an actress to become a big star. Garbo was forced to lose weight and learn English, her hair was dyed, her teeth were fixed, and her eyebrows were tweezed into thin threads. – In 1926, Garbo played a Spanish singer in her first American film called Torrent. It was a hit.
– Most of Garbo’s films were love stories or dramas, and her unique performance on screen combined both passion and restraint.
– Despite being one of Hollywood’s major idols, she didn’t attend movie premieres, talk to reporters, or sign autographs.
– In 1930, she made her debut in the sound film Anna Christie. Her raspy sound fascinated people no less than her gaze that could replicate dozens of emotions. The picture was once again well received.
– According to TIME, she was the top-paid actor in 1934, with a whopping $500,000 salary! – In 1941, she appeared in Two-Faced Woman. The critics called the story silly, and it was a flop. The film’s failure supposedly hurt the actress’s self-esteem tremendously. – She moved to Manhattan, where she’d take long strolls down the streets of New York wearing huge sunglasses to not be spotted. – And although she wasn’t making movies anymore, she hadn’t given up on art entirely. She turned to collecting paintings and bought the works of Jawlensky, Renoir, and many others.
– Greta Garbo died in 1990 at the age of 84. As biographer Barry Paris put it, she was an anomaly. Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz

A Crack Under Ocean May Pull Europe and the Americas Together

You might know already that our planet hasn’t always been separated into seven continents. Once upon a time, it was all one huge supercontinent called Pangea. But the movement didn’t stop, so in the future, we might just be a couple continents short? In 1755, there was a huge earthquake in Lisbon, Portugal that had catastrophic consequences. After that, everything went quiet, and for more than 200 years no more natural disasters happened. But then, in 1969, another earthquake shook the west of Portugal — this one milder, but it was still considered very powerful. It was then that marine geologist João Duarte started looking at the tectonic plates beneath Portugal. He was concerned with those earthquakes for a single reason: they were not normal… TIMESTAMPS:
What a “normal” earthquake is 1:13
What’s so unusual about an earthquake in Portugal? 3:03
👉 This research looks like bad news 👈 3:26
So what will happen to the planet? 5:29
The Atlantic Ocean might disappear. Wait, what?! 😨 6:21
How exactly our planet will become a supercontinent 8:09 #geology #continents #brightside SUMMARY:
– Quakes happen when two tectonic plates meet, and one of them is forced underneath the other because of gravity and pressure. – The plate beneath the continent of North America spreads to the northeast and covers the whole of Greenland and its coastal waters.
– So what’s so unusual about an earthquake in Portugal, then? The thing is, this country is far from any tectonic fault, and the plate it sits on is flat. – Duarte’s team found that the plate they were looking at has been undergoing the process of serpentinization. It’s a natural process when the rock in the seabed absorbs water. – You see, when tectonic masses move around, they eventually bump into each other. For now, there’s a set number of those plates, and they’re moving at a verrrry slow rate. – The brand new tectonic plate will go underneath the Atlantic Ocean and collide with several other plates at once.
– It’ll be pushed under some of them and above others, but the result will be all the same: more and more subduction zones will start appearing, causing natural disasters… and the eventual disappearance of the Atlantic Ocean itself.
– If some newcomer shifts all the rest of the tectonic plates, it will eventually lead to water seeping away from the Atlantic Ocean. – And while the movement of the plates continues — and it will go on until there’s space for that — the landscape of our planet will continue reshaping. – Today, scientists believe that the Atlantic Ocean is opening, while the Pacific, on the contrary, is closing. If this tendency persists, then both American continents will go join the club with Africa and Eurasia.
– Don’t worry, though: this all might sound really cool, but geological processes take a lot of time. Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz

25 Things That Are Only Possible in Australia

Australia is a country where people pay with plastic money, some fish are over 300 million years old, and cockroach racing is a big deal. In Australia, some roads are so long and boring that they put signs there to entertain drivers. They can contain images of rich local fauna, or trivia questions to keep you alert, and possibly even save your life in the fatigue zone. It is a fascinating country where you can rent a grandma and see a fire that’s been burning for over 5,500 years. Interested? Here is a list of facts that you might not know about the country but are useful if you ever plan to travel there. 19 Famous Products You Won’t Recognize In a Foreign Country

Before introducing a new product to a particular region, marketing specialists conduct research and thoroughly study consumer expectations. Manufacturing companies try to adapt packaging designs and product names to meet national peculiarities of the market. So if you think you know exactly how your favorite candy bar looks, try to recognize it in some other country. For example, imagine you arrive in Quebec and decide to go satisfy your hunger in KFC. Only… It's not KFC you're going to – it's PFK! Or did you know you won't be able to visit Burger King in Australia? Yup, the Australian branch is called Hungry Jack. Interested? Here's a fun list of products that look and sometimes sound a bit different depending on the country they’re sold in. TIMESTAMPS:
Coca-Cola Light 0:36
Lenor 1:22
Olay 1:50
Cocoa Krispies 2:42
Tide 3:21
Mr. Clean 3:58
Burger King 4:43
Vaseline 5:22
KFC 5:38
Axe 6:07
Dove 6:51
Danone 7:20

Rexona 9:12
Knorr 9:46
Becel 10:12
T.J.Maxx 10:38
Sprite 11:03 #travel #food #brightside SUMMARY:
– People from Europe tend to get confused when striving to spot Coca-Cola Light in American or British supermarkets. What they might not know is that in these countries, low-calorie Coca-Cola is called Diet Coke!
– When people from Europe, Japan, and Russia wash their clothes, they often use a popular fabric softener called Lenor. But no matter how hard you try to find this product in the US, all you'll see on the shelves will be blue bottles labeled Downy.
– Another product of Procter&Gamble, Tide laundry detergent has not one, but three names! In Central Europe, this product is known by the name "Vizir," and in Turkey, you'll buy "Alo." – Vaseline, a popular remedy for dry skin, sounds different in Spanish and Portuguese. That's why if you need this product, let's say, in Brazil or Mexico, make sure you ask for Vasenol. – Dove is a popular chocolate brand you can find nearly everywhere in the world. But if you come to Egypt, India, or the UK, look for chocolates named "Galaxy."
– People from Europe are used to the chocolate-covered bar, Milky Way, which is wrapped in blue packaging with little white stars. But if you want to munch on the same bar in the US, search for the one called 3 Musketeers. – Few people know that modern-day Lay's first appeared in the UK under the name of Walkers more than 70 years ago! And guess what? In Great Britain, they still crunch Walkers!-
– The Rexona brand, which produces world-known deodorants and antiperspirants is called Degree, in South Africa – Shield, in the UK and Ireland – Sure, and in Japan and South Korea – Rexena.
– Ever heard of low-fat margarine called "Becel"? Nope? And how about the one called "Promise"?
– A renowned American retailer, T.J. Maxx, miraculously turns into T.K. Maxx once you go to Europe. – In China, you won't find a bottle of Sprite, even if you try really hard! But pay attention to the drink called "Xuebi" – it's the same soda so many people are crazy about. 11 Places Way More Mysterious Than Bermuda Triangle

It’s one of the most terrifyingly fascinating places on our planet. Ships and planes simply vanish, radios and compasses just stop working, and some even say they’ve spotted UFOs there. And it's not the one and only Bermuda Triangle. There are at least 11 other mysterious places. So what are they, and how do they form? Ivan T. Sanderson, a writer, a biologist, and a huge fan of the paranormal and inexplicable, traveled a lot and recorded his experiences. What caught his attention the most was where the strangest unexplained things kept happening. That is, disappearing ships and whatnot. He was able to map 12 of these places scattered all over the world. But the weird thing is, 6 of them lie almost perfectly in line above the Equator, and the same goes for the 6 below it… TIMESTAMPS:

The North and South Poles 8:06 Theories about these Vile Vortices:
– Ley lines 8:52
– Giant puzzle 9:32
– A lot of geologic activity 10:04 #mystery #bermudatriangle #brightside SUMMARY:
– Besides the paranormal theories of wormholes to another dimension and gates to the underworld, the Bermuda Triangle is really foggy due to methane gas that sometimes makes it impossible for travelers to see, thus making navigation a little tricky too. – The Algerian Megaliths are an architectural anomaly, showing just how advanced these people were for a time when we didn’t have the technology to help us build stable constructions. – Mohenjo-Daro in Pakistan goes way back to the Indus Valley Civilization in 2500 BCE. Like in Algeria, this society was, for some reason, surprisingly advanced when it came to building and urban planning.
– Heading further east along the same northern line, we arrive in Japan, where the Dragon’s Triangle, also called the Devil’s Sea, is located. The most astonishing thing about this Vile Vortex is that there’s an underwater city dubbed Japan’s Atlantis. – Located in the Ring of Fire, the next Vile Vortex is the Hamakulia Volcano in Hawaii. Locals treat it with utmost respect as the volcano is believed to have a mysterious power. – Now let’s head south of the Equator to one of the most isolated places on this planet: Easter Island in Polynesia. This is where you can find nearly 900 Moai statues created by the Rapa Nui people. – The South Atlantic Anomaly is a part of Earth where natural radiation flows out of control.
– Another impressive megalith, this time in Zimbabwe. It was once home to around 20,000 people… but it’s now a ghost town. – Poor Australia has Vile Vortices on both sides. Heading over to the east, there’s the Loyalty Islands. A lot of strange whirlpools were found on this patch of the South Pacific as well as plenty of geologic activity.

– Biologists say that in no small measure, the genes you have influence your life span. There’s no denying that the Queen is pretty lucky on that front.
– Elizabeth II married Prince Philip in 1947. Their love story’s been going on for over 70 years now!
