The World’s Richest Man Who Refused to Pay for His Own Grandson

Benjamin Franklin said a penny saved is a penny earned, and it’s a good motto to live by! But there are exceptions to that rule, especially in tough situations! Everyone knows the big billionaire names like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Bill Gates. But what about J. Paul Getty? Getty was the richest man on Earth back in the 1960s. With about $1.2 billion then, that’d be like having almost $10 billion today! But the oil tycoon wasn’t only famous for his wealth but also for his extreme penny-pinching. And the incident that sealed his position as a legendary miser was a dark one. That was the kidnapping of his 16-year-old grandson, John Paul Getty III, in 1973… Other videos you might like:

Billionaire J. Paul Getty exchanges smiles with Tricia Nixon Cox, former President Richard Nixon's daughter, in London on Dec. 15, 1972. The occasion was a party marking Getty's 80th birthday: By Associated Press/East News, https://www.eastnews.ru/pictures/picture/id/8477922/i/0/t/0

– On one fateful day, the boy was out buying a comic book at a newsstand. It was then when the kidnappers grabbed him. They issued a ransom note demanding $17 million for the young man’s safe return.
– When the boy’s father asked his own father for the money, he was refused. The miserly grandfather thought it was just a ploy to extract money from him. – Well, all doubts of the kidnapping being a hoax were laid to rest when the kidnappers started making very real threats to bring harm to the young man.
– After five months, the old man finally relented but only after he’d negotiated with the abductors and brought the ransom down to $3 million.
– He later told the media that he didn’t believe in paying kidnappers. “I have 14 other grandchildren, and if I pay one penny now, then I’ll have 14 kidnapped grandchildren,” is the way he put it. – He managed to buy the 72-room mansion for about half the price that the owner had paid 40 years earlier when he purchased it. – His secretary claimed that Getty would wash his clothes by hand because he didn't want to pay for them to be laundered. – And on those rare occasions that he did get himself some clothes, he was miserly about that too. For example, he never bought a pair of socks that cost more than $1.
– To save money on central heating, he placed a few electrical heaters in his sitting room. – Getty decided to install a pay-phone in his home for his guests. That’s right, to make a call, they had to pay! – Getty claimed that his frugality towards others was a response to people trying to take advantage of him and not paying their fair share. – Despite all his wealth and fame, J. Paul Getty lived a solitary life. He was married and divorced five times. And despite having five sons and many grandchildren, he almost always lived alone. – Remember Ebrose? The archmaester of the Citadel. He appeared in the seventh season of Game of Thrones. While this was in 2017 and you probably still remember him, the same can’t be said about the well-intentioned but nutty Professor Horace Slughorn, who came out of retirement to teach potions at Hogwarts.
– We all know who Catelyn Stark was; the strong-willed Lady of Winterfell and the wife of Lord Eddard Stark. But do you remember seeing her in the Harry Potter movies? Michelle Fairley had a very brief appearance in the movie series as Hermione’s mother.
– The English actress Sally Mortemore appeared in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, where she played Madame Pince, the librarian of Hogwarts. In 2016 she made a cameo as an unnamed Braavosi woman in season 6 of Game of Thrones. – Freddie Stroma played the role of a student at Hogwarts named Cormac McLaggen, who was a keeper in the Gryffindor quidditch team. In Game of Thrones, he appeared in the sixth season as Dickon Tarly, Samwell Tarly’s younger brother.
– Julian Glover was the voice of Aragog, Hagrid's giant spider friend who lives in the Forbidden Forest. But any Game of Thrones fan would instantly recognize him as the Grand Maester who served under multiple kings.
– Nicholas Blane made a blink-and-you'll-miss appearance in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as Bob. In Game of Thrones, he has a slightly longer role as the Spice King of Qarth.
– Bronson Webb played the role of an unnamed Slytherin student who happens to be a friend of Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. In Game of Thrones, he appeared as Will, a member of the Night's Watch.
– In the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Daniel Tuite makes a quick appearance in a crowded hall as the "skinny ministry wizard." In Game of Thrones, however, he has the meatier role of Walder Frey's son Lothar Frey.
– Natalia Tena is one of the few actors who had a significant role in both the Harry Potter movies as well as Game of Thrones. In the Harry Potter movies, she played the purple-haired witch Nymphadora Tonks. She joined the Game of Thrones cast as the fearless wildling spearwife Osha.
– David Bradley played Argus Filch, the often-cruel caretaker at Hogwarts. In Game of Thrones, he got to play Walder Frey, the awful head of House Frey who betrayed the Stark family. Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz —————————————————————————————-

A 5-Minute Japanese Massage to Tone Up Your Face Muscles

If you’re a girl, you probably have all kinds of masks, creams, and other facial care stuff that’s crowding your bathroom shelf. But did you know that you can effectively lift your face and improve your skin tone with nothing more than your own hands? The technique is called Korugi, and it’s a face massage that works wonders. You see, with age, the fat in your face redistributes itself, accumulating in some areas more than in others. Also, your facial muscles start to sag with time. These factors contribute to changes in how your face looks when you age. What Korugi massage does is tone your facial muscles and dissipate the fat under your skin. Other videos you might like:

What exactly Korugi massage does 4:53 #facemassage #skincare #naturalbeauty Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY:
– Korugi massage was invented by a Japanese therapist Chiyo Hayashi, and it targets not just the skin itself but the layers of fat and muscle tissue beneath. – You should first and foremost consider whether you have ENT diseases, lymphatic system disorders, chronic skin conditions, or facial wounds. If you do, then Korugi isn’t for you. – Japanese and Korean adepts of this technique say that, if performed correctly, Korugi can even reshape your bone structure.
– First of all, while pulling and pressing on your skin like this, you make the lymphatic fluid move, which removes any signs of swelling and puffiness from your face. That includes those dark circles and bags under your eyes too!
– Good blood supply is necessary for that healthy, rose-cheeked look, and it also helps get the necessary vitamins and nutrients to your face. – Your skin becomes more elastic as it is pulled and filled with a healthy amount of lymph and blood.
– Korugi massage helps reshape your face oval, making your features look sharper. This happens because, as you age, your skin starts sagging, making your face sort of blurred. – Don’t be surprised if your face starts aching the day after you’ve done the massage. That’s a common reaction of your muscles that haven’t seen any exercise for a while. Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz —————————————————————————————-

17 House Details in the US That Puzzle Foreigners

The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave… and apparently huge freezing-cold houses with weird sockets? What’s so strange about American homes? Well, when non-American people find themselves in American houses they often point out how bizarre some things are. Wearing shoes inside is one of the things that confuse foreigners, cause most of the world has a pretty strict policy about taking your shoes off at the front door. Also, Americans usually don't have tea kettle in the kitchen, and their toilet bowls are full of water. Interested? So let's see what an ordinary American home looks like! – The typical American home is pretty big and spacious compared to other countries.
– There are closets for clothes in each bedroom, usually one near the front door for coats and shoes, one in the bathroom or hallway for towels, one in the kitchen in the form of a pantry.
– Speaking of rooms, there’s also usually one just for doing laundry. Also, most Americans have both a washer AND a separate dryer, and they tend to be big too! – A lot of American homes have gorgeous finished basements that serve as another living space. It might be in the form of a guest room or a recreational area to hang out in. – Fire safety is taken so seriously in the States that landlords can get in big trouble if they don’t immediately fix a non-working smoke alarm for their tenants. – Low-sitting toilets actually serve a purpose – being closer to the ground is a healthier and more natural way to, ya know, do your numbers.
– In the US, sinks always have just one faucet, and you can customize the temperature of the water however you like.
– Most families are totally ok with wearing shoes inside around the house, as long as they’re not muddy or anything. Sure, there are those American families that don’t do it. – Apparently in Europe, you have a switch to either allow the power to flow by turning a button on or cutting it by switching it off. In America, you don’t have this option.
– Garbage disposals are a lot more common in the States. In fact, over 50% of American homes have one.
– Americans really do love to display the ol’ Star-Spangled Banner, so most homes here have at least one hanging outside the house.
– Americans like to take care of their yard. Plus, most neighborhoods have rules about it! Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz —————————————————————————————-

Find Out Your True Hair Type with This Simple Test

When bad hair days are your everyday reality, it really zaps the fun out of your morning routine. Thankfully, all you need to do to make your hair perfect is know your hair type and how to operate with it! In the 90s, Andre Walker, one of the most talented hairstylists who worked with Oprah Winfrey and Halle Berry, came up with his own hair typing system. It was originally created for his hair care line but quickly became widely popular. Basically, Andre Walker classifies not one or two but 9 different types of hair! And it's time to find out which one of them is yours. Other videos you might like:

– Hair group #1 4:17
– Hair group #2 5:21
– Hair group #3 6:11
– Hair group #4 7:20 #haircare #hairstyle #naturalhair Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY:
– In the Andre Walker hair typing system, everything comes down to how curly your hair is naturally. – 1A hair is usually not thick at all and extremely soft and fine. Its biggest advantage is that it naturally looks really shiny.
– 1B hair, on the other hand, is kinda thick and has great volume near the roots, so it looks way more full than 1A hair type.
– 1C hair is really thick and has impressive volume. However, it's almost impossible to curl! This type is pretty common among Asian women.
– 2A hair is right in between wavy and straight. Without any styling, it tends to form weak S-shaped strands, curling a bit at the ends.
– 2B hair has way more visible and prominent S-shaped curls. It can be slightly frizzy as well, adhering to the shape of your head.
– 2C hair combines wavy and curly hair. It's very frizzy, quickly curls up in humid environments, and has tons of volume and generally thicker waves. – 3A hair is shiny and great at taking any form you want it to. This type has a very definite S-shape which makes it appear full and healthy. – 3B type has a smaller curl pattern than 3A, ranging from spiral-like curls to tight corkscrews. It also has a combination texture. – 3C hair is actually thinner than 3A and 3B but its curls are smaller which makes it appear thicker. Plus, it's very tight, almost to the point of being kinky. – 4A hair has an S-shaped pattern if you stretch it, but usually it's just tight coils. It tends to be thin, brittle, and fragile.
– 4B hair bends with really sharp angles and often has a Z-shape and zigzag-like curls. Just like 4A, this type is pretty fragile as well. – And 4C type is the hardest to style and take care of. It doesn't have a definite curl pattern which makes it look awesome but extremely hard to comb.
– Straight and soft hair like yours gets dirty and oily pretty quickly, so try to pick the shampoos that have curative clay as one of the components. It will make your hair stay clean longer. – If you fall into the second hair group, your hair care should be completely different. Your main task is to make your hair look thick without it looking crazy and messy. Try to look for shampoos and conditioners with a moisturizing effect. – Curly-haired guys and girls from hair group number 3 have pretty much the same end goal as people with type 2 hair – keeping their curls hydrated.
– And, finally, type 4, it's your turn! Your hair doesn't get oily that easily, so unlike hair type number one, you don't have to wash it that often. The softer your shampoo and conditioner are, the better. Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz —————————————————————————————-

That’s How Wi-Fi Actually Works

Remember the days when your internet was connected through the phone line? Oh, that sound of dial-up! We’ve come a long way since then, and chances are that you’re watching this video through Wi-Fi right now. So how did we get here anyway? In the 1980s, personal computers had begun to enter our lives for good. But at that time, they were connected to the internet through the infamous Ethernet cables. Maybe scientists were getting tired of tripping over all those cables? They decided they wanted to start sending data using radio signals. However, those early attempts were unsuccessful. What scientists didn’t know at the time was that the problem had been solved a decade before PCs were even invented! Other videos you might like:

That’s when a popular Hollywood actress and inventor by the name of Hedy Lamarr came up with a way to prevent radio signals from being tampered with. – Early attempts were unsuccessful since it all bounced back on walls, furniture, and pretty much anything that stood in a computer’s way.
– It all started back in the 1970s, with electrical engineer Dr. John O’Sullivan, a.k.a. “the father of Wi-Fi.” At the time, he and his team were trying to detect radio signals from distant black holes in space, and they came up with complex equations called Fast Fourier transforms.
– After a lot of experimentation, they took their fancy Fast Fourier transforms, added them in the mixture with the data equations they’d previously tried to send over radio, and thus they formed the basis for the Wi-Fi we all know and love today!
– Later in 1996, they further developed their original key patent, and by 1997 they finally cracked the code and came up with the first version of the 802.11 protocol. – Wi-fi is a pun for the word Hi-Fi, which means “high fidelity” – a technical term used for high-quality audio technology.
– The frequencies Wi-Fi routers use are 2.4 or 5 Gigahertz per second, which is why data gets transferred so quickly to your phone. – If you have baby monitors, garage doors, microwaves, cordless phones, and wireless cameras, they can interfere with your Wi-Fi. – When you turn your phone or computer on and get on the internet, all the information you’d like to access is broken down into binary code. And when you access something through Wi-Fi, then that binary code is transformed into wave frequencies. – Is Wi-Fi dangerous? Well, the short answer is no. Wi-Fi works at extremely low voltages. Even at short distances, Wi-Fi is just part of the household "smog" that’s generated by TV and radio signals.
– A typical router works at about 100 feet in every direction. As for what can block it, that’s pretty much anything that conducts electricity, like metal, water, mirrors, and even our bodies since they mainly consist of water. – Harry is an orphan who lives in a cupboard under the stairs with his aunt, uncle, and cousin. They’re not the nicest of people, and they treat Harry like dirt.
– Hermione Granger comes from a family of highly educated people in the real world. Her parents are just normal (or “muggle”) dentists.
– Ron Weasley always gets hand-knitted sweaters from his mom for Christmas, and she often sends him letters known as “howlers” that scream at the poor guy for everyone around to hear! – Hagrid is a massive man who looks scary when you first see him. But we soon learn that he’s just a big sweetheart with a giant heart of gold. – Neville Longbottom, who’s extremely clumsy and forgetful, also ends up becoming a hero once he decides to be brave. – Anyway, the study, called “The Greatest Magic of Harry Potter: Reducing Prejudice,” was led by psychologist Dr. Loris Vezzali. It consisted of 3 parts in which they tested elementary, high-school, and university students. – They noticed a significant connection between people who identify with the positive characters in the series and a better attitude toward stigmatized groups in society. – In the books and movies, there’s an overwhelming positive message with a focus on love, friendship, and tolerance, even in the face of horrible circumstances. – Reading about the struggles of alienated people could make you more sensitive towards them, as you can see through their eyes and picture yourself in their shoes.
