We're reviewing a lot of what's happened recently, especially our trip to New York. First, we rang Nasdaq’s closing bell — a dream come true! Then we presented at the TradersExpo. Overall, it was an awesome trip. This was actually my second time ringing the bell at Nasdaq. It was an honor both times! It’s awesome to be up on a giant billboard in Times Square. And it was great to be back at the TradersExpo. It’s been about a decade since my last time. It’s interesting to see what different traders are into — blue-chip stocks versus penny stocks, low-priced stocks, options, and so on. It seems like the whole world hates low-priced stocks, but they work for me. I think it’s a great niche, especially for average retail traders. You can control your risk, and you're not competing against huge investors because there's not enough money to be made. You can hate on penny stocks, and you can hate on me. But I like to keep it real. I'm gonna keep doing what's worked for me for the past 20 years. The patterns haven't changed, and the rules haven't changed. I’ve refined my rules a little bit. I'm way more cautious now — I'm more long biased. I have lots of lessons on short selling, but in this current market, and with the amount of newbie shorts, the risk/reward just isn’t there. Trading volatile stocks in one way to go, but you have to be prepared and have a plan. Look for the potential upside. And remember to monitor the risk! If you don't have that potential upside, the stock isn’t worth trading. If you don't know how to monitor the risk, it’s not worth trading. It’s a balancing act. Learn from the process. Don’t copy our trades or anyone else’s trades. See what we do right, as well as what we do wrong. Adopt the ‘no days off’ mentality. If you have a job, are in school, or have a family, make time to study. You can study at night and on weekends. There’s plenty of time in the day … If you’re wasting it, stop doing that! You can create your dream life. It’s up to you to commit. There will always be opportunities. The key is to be ready for those opportunities. Trading is all about improving yourself. You work to improve your knowledge account and your bank account. You work to improve over time. So even if you don't get it right away, you have to be patient. Pace yourself for the long haul. This is a marathon and not a sprint. Invest in yourself. Put your money into education and learn to be self-sufficient. Twitter: https://bit.ly/2P46g8n You need a broker to make trades. But you don't want to risk too much with your broker. For instance, I wouldn’t trust a prop firm or some sketchy offshore broker. There are so many different brokers with different schemes. You have to be careful when choosing. I tend to stick with big companies because when the markets crash the smaller brokers and prop firms can risk going out of business. It can seem like signing your life away when you sign up with these brokers — I've been there. I mention certain brokers for their credibility. I’m NOT working with them. They actually don’t like me because I trade very little and I'm super patient. That’s how I think you should be. No broker is perfect, but some are better than others. When choosing a broker, you don't wanna bend the rules. Remember, you can't cheat your way to success. If you struggle to trade consistently or find your niche with a legit broker, the last thing you should do is pursue some of these gray areas. There's just too much downside risk. Watch out for sketchy or questionable brokers, like the ones that don't charge any commissions. From what I hear, their market and executions are terrible. You have to think about how a broker makes money. If they're not charging commissions, they're making it through other means. So they may actually route your order out to other firms and take a little slice of the pie. I’m okay with paying small commissions to a larger company because that's the price of doing good business. I like to play it safe. Think about it this way: What can you do NOW to better position yourself in the future? You need to find a reliable broker that'll be there for the long run. Twitter: https://bit.ly/2P46g8n I’m here today with TheStreet discussing some of my tips for traders. I got into the stock market when I was 18 using my bar mitzvah money. My parents gave me full control of it. They thought I would blow up my account. But I used the internet to educate myself. That's a beautiful thing, and too many people don't realize they can learn nearly everything online. Now, twenty years later, I trade and teach. I trade with a small account, and I donate all my trading profits to charity. I could focus on trading with a big account, but I'd rather trade with a small account to teach others. And every year, I reset my account. So far in 2019, the overall market is on fire! I underestimated it. I was in protection mode after November and December. I was trying to teach and protect myself and my students from the big drop. But then I missed out on a big runner. I also haven't re-strategized. Just because I missed out doesn’t make me want to chase — then it just becomes a vengeance trade. I’d rather play it safe and sit on the sidelines. Let’s talk about a few specific trading styles … When it comes to scalping, you're trying to make a penny or two. While it can add up, it can be dangerous … You’re going for small gains, and one significant loss can wipe out two weeks of scalping gains. I've done that before. I like to go for bigger moves. I opt for patience over scalping. Swing trading is tough, especially after a 10-year bull market. I just don't trust the overall markets. I think we're on the verge of some big crash or something. So I like to be overly cautious. And I don’t use leverage ever. Period. Here’s how I approach the market: I can be a bit of an addict … So I'm endlessly fascinated by different stocks and setups. I have to control that because most setups or stocks will let me down. I focus on MY key patterns. I like to trade like a sniper. I have one or two stocks at any one time. Trade only a few stocks you know. Don’t just chase patterns and stocks you love. A lot of the strategies that worked in the past don't necessarily work right now. You have to keep learning and adapting. Also, trade patterns that you learn over time and that you grow to love. Find strategies that work for you. We're all different. So let me tell you what you can learn from my exhaustion … First, here’s what I’m up to: GoT premiere, filming video lessons, doing podcasts, meeting with my paraplegic student Anthony (awesome guy, incredible story), speaking at my old college Tulane University, working with this great charity Project Chicken Soup … and finally seeing my parents again after four months. I'm not telling you any of this to brag. I just have a lot going on and you can learn from all of it. Lesson #1: Don't do what I'm doing. Don't push yourself to the brink of exhaustion. Don’t burn yourself out. Space everything out and give yourself a chance to breathe. Lesson #2: Sometimes you can't control what happens. So just go with the flow. Do the best that you can. Granted, I burned myself out a bit, but at least I've been open to everything. I'm not saying you should just say yes to everything. Just think about what you CAN do. You might surprise yourself with what you can accomplish and how much you can push yourself when you’re really open to it. It all comes down to your mindset. Too many students simply don't want to push themselves. They don't want to put in the time or the effort to learn. I’m trying to change that mindset. I want you to strive for the absolute best … and thrive! One last lesson — be more giving. Whether it’s money or time, we all have something we can give. It’s taken two decades and a ton of hard work to learn everything I know. I want to share it all with you! How have you overextended yourself in the past? The market can tell you what the next hot sector is. You just have to wait for the right setup. You don't have to predict this stuff ahead of time. This trading game doesn’t have to be as hard as a lot of you make it out to be. I think a little differently. I sit and wait. When I say I trade like a sniper, I mean I only want to take my shot when I see a truly great setup. And I don't mind if you start tinkering. You might get bored. So start practicing! Use StocksToTrade! There's paper money — it's like fantasy cash — you can start playing with different patterns without risking a dime. That can help you better guess what the next hot sector will be. When you start to see two or three big gainers in a sector you’ll start to recognize them, and you won’t have to play the guessing game. Collect data every day. Then use that data every single day. Watch for trends. Say one sector heats up for two or three days in a row. Is that the beginning of something, or is that just a quick ‘run and done?’ You can have a sector or stock run for multiple days. And it can dip for a week or two and bounce back. A hot sector can cool and then heat up again. That’s how hot sectors work. It's not all at once. Sometimes, it can take a few days or a few weeks — so beware. Look for big percent gainers, similarities, and some kind of trend in the same sector. Write down the tickers that are in play and why. Track your data and review it.
