Recently, I appeared on a Jubilee video that was looking to answer that question. In the video, they assembled six millionaire entrepreneurs, including me. The goal was “to see the range of their values and beliefs.” The other entrepreneurs came from all kinds of different sectors. There was an e-commerce investor, an e-commerce seller, a fat-freezing business owner, a real estate agent/investor, and a marketing agency owner. And me. We had to assess ourselves on a variety of statements like “I am self-made” and “I know what it feels like to be poor.” It was interesting to see where we all landed on the spectrum from strongly agree to strongly disagree. It’s a pretty cool idea. And I’m honored to be featured by Jubilee … But the editing was limited. You’ve gotta remember this … any video like this is ALWAYS heavily edited. I’ve been on reality TV before. I can tell you firsthand that they often cut important stuff. Some of my responses don’t totally reflect my full thoughts. So here, I go through the video point by point to explain my point of view and expand on my responses. For example, the first statement is “I am self-made.” I got a lot of flak about my response here. But honestly, I think being self-made is less about how much you start with and more about what you do with what you have. For example … Can you do what you want in life? Can you donate to charity and buy what you want? Do you live where you want? Do you work for someone else? Honestly, I’m a little disappointed by the nitpicking about the exact dollar amount you start with and how that relates to whether you’re self-made. I’ll tell you why I think self-made is a mentality, not a dollar amount … and why I disagree with some of the other millionaires. Another biggie? This statement: “I know what it feels like to be poor.” My response got a ton of reactions! Watch the video for my response. I’m not trying to rip on poor people at all.
